- Provisions. You’re going into business and therefore need the basics such as an emailing service, web page editor, inventory storage and shopping cart program. Make sure what’s on offer is suitable for your business and the niche market you are entering.
- Reliability. If there is a problem with the Server running your website, then nobody can see or order from you, which mean loss of sales. Make sure your web hosting company has an “uptime” of 99% or better. Anything else won’t do.
- Security. This is very important for your customers as they need to know that any information they give will be safe and secure. At a minimum you should be able to offer Secure Socket Layer (SSL) security for your customers. Some Providers include SSL security in their packages, whilst others offer to get an SSL certificate for you for an extra fee.
- Service. You are a customer of your chosen web hosting service and as such are entitled to a level of service and technical support. What that level is depends on which package you have chosen but, at a minimum, you should have at least email and phone support available. Check the response times to a query, find out their “opening times” (a good hosting company should provide support twenty four hours a day, seven days a week), are there any online guides or tutorials you can access.
